Brandon's mural will be at LACMA Artwalk this Saturday, May 14
As most of you know, Brandon recently collaborated with his long time friends at Hurley creating a set of t-shirt designs with a very specific intention of his choosing - to raise awareness about single use plastics and their detrimental effect on our oceans.
Raise awareness it did, particularly when he chose to bring the designs to a larger than life scale, painting three 10 feet high walls of the Hurley gallery, )( Space, over the course of two weeks. As his first time painting a mural the task was both daunting and highly rewarding, and showcased three designs: a “water bottle island”, a “garbage pail whale” and a concentric group of circles reminding the audience that we shoulder these problems, and responsibilities, together.
A profound message seamed each piece of the mural together and flowed through his line work on the walls like a wave itself, ‘We Are an Island, We are a beautiful island…’
These words extracted from Brandon’s poem that appears on the inside of the t-shirts and reads:
We are an island
And whether by luck ormisfortune
We have nowhere elseto go
We are a beautifulisland
But we are misguidedand off course
Demand clean energy!
Ban single use plastics!
Protect our island,
And give Hope to ourchildren’s children.
Leave the islandbetter than you found it.
Part of the mural will be on display this Saturday at LACMA Artwalk, so if you didn't catch it at Hurley, now is a time to check it out. Look for other pieces of the mural to travel in the future as well...
