Promises, Promises - Significance of twenty three?
Mike posted a blog about a week and a half ago with the score for "Promises, Promises", one of the songs on the new album...if you haven't seen it yet and want to CLICK HERE
The lyrics are:
"I'm only twenty three for another hour give or take. I'm a fan of yours and I need a good mistake. I'm not a sinner or preacher. All I have is sleight of hand. I do magic tricks for all the boys in the band. Baby could I be the rabbit in your hat? I'd swing if you hand me hand me the bat. I'm on the road of least resistance. I'd rather give up than give into this. So promise me only one thing would you? Just don't ever make me promises. No promises. I've never done this before promises promises. But I'm enjoying the illusion and the things my body says. Now you see me now you don't, oh how well you disappear. What are you running from? And may I interfere? The first thing I thought of when I read the lyrics was "Pardon Me"..."A decade ago I never thought I would be at twenty three on the verge of spontaneous combustion, woe-is-me"
What is the significance of twenty three? Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I very seriously doubt Brandon would write more lyrics using the age of twenty three by mere coincidence...
Opinions? Thoughts?

Thank you for bringing up the Lyrics. I can only read them and give an interpretation bound to my imagery and experience of metaphors being used, but here are my thoughts:
23 for me in this regard is the 23 hours of the virtual day (of one lifetime until the moment things happen) and there is only one hour left to give up or give in. There is a decision to make and time is running fast.

I'm actually really glad you posted this, because I noticed that right off the bat as well.

don't think there's a connection to be made with 'Pardon Me' , believe that was just the chrono age of author at the time.
the reference in 'Promises...' i read in terms of time, hrs in a day, as did our friend Oceana Light.
however, as for interpreting a lyric i'm awful...there's just too much ego for my id and the verse always ends up revolving around me! *tahateehee

I wondered this very thing, but did not give much thought to an explanation since I'm not always amazing at lyrical interpretation--I think this interpretation is very probable though! Thanks!
