Hey y'all. I've noticed in reading comments about incubus songs and albums--many via youtube comment boards--that there are A LOT of haters of 'new incubus', and specifically light grenades. they say that incubus has gone downhill since science or fungous amoungus or whatever. i've also read people saying they should've 'stayed on drugs' because their music and lyrical themes have gotten a little low-key and mushy.
for me, light grenades is a hair short of being my favorite incubus album (to morning view). i can understand one having a dislike for a song or even a few on the album (for me, it'd be the earth to bella songs), but song-for-song i think it's a stellar collection (quicksand, dig, anna molly, rogues--my god.) are the haters of light grenades just resistant to change, or is there something legitimate that i'm missing here? as objectively as possible, will someone fill me in? thanks

I love Light Grenades and I love the fact that Incubus changes with each album. I'm really hoping to hear "Pendulous Threads" on the If Not Now, When? tour.
To each his own, but I say fuck the Light Grenades haters!
Permalink Reply by Alex Duys on May 16, 2011 at 6:13am They should have combined the two ETB's, and added Punch Drunk and Look Alive to the CD. Then LG would be a damn good album. Love Hurts however is simply to cheesy for me.
Pendulous Threads, Roques and Paper shoes is ingenious songs!
Permalink Reply by Jelger on May 16, 2011 at 7:38am Don't assume that the 'haters' (got I'm a hater of that word) can't handle change. I think for most people it's the singles that put them of. Love Hurst, Oil & Water... they aren't really showcasing the best of the band to be honest. Also, the Earth To Bella's seem to put a lot of people of. It's also in the simplicity of some of the songs, like the main riff in Diamonds and Coal. Lot of people also seem to dislike the chorus in Kiss To Send Us Off.
Personally, I really like Light Grenades. I could do without ever hearing Love Hurts, Oil & Water, Diamonds and Coal or either Earth To Bella live, and Punch Drunk and Look Alive could have easily replaced two of those, but Dig, Anna Molly, Kiss To Send Us Off, Light Grenades, Pendulous and Rogues are great tracks. But since Morning View, the band has, if you ask me, never been able to capture the same authenticy on the more cheesy tracks. I mean, Wish You Were Here is cheesy, but it has a comfortable atmosphere, like it's a natural born-child from the band musical influences. Love Hurts and the likes feel much more like sperm-donor babies. On INNW, they continue the trend with having a few cheesy, pop-tracks between some solid tracks. They can't seem to reach the same consistency. At least not for me.

Hey, i appreciate your reply. i was giving the so-called 'haters' the benefit of the doubt in asking if there was a legitimate reason behind what i noticed. however, the 'resistant to change' remark is not merely an assumption. 2 minutes of searching through science-era incubus tracks on youtube will reveal exactly the attitude i'm talking about. many people are simply fans of nu-metal-whatever you want to call it incubus and think everything after is garbage. that said, i'm glad you cited some real reasons why incubus can be seen as going downhill since the earlier days.
you make some really good points about the cheesiness of some songs (though i disagree with you about wish you were here!). i can see why a 'love hurts' isn't as representative of the band as a 'just a phase.' however, i'd make the case that at least for their first two albums, the (oftentimes downright ridiculous) things brandon chose to sing about were AT LEAST just as cheesy and lame as some of their objectionable material today.
thoughts?

Permalink Reply by Jeff Burgess on May 18, 2011 at 6:42pm I have always thought that! I actually did it on the program "Garageband" haha! I also combined "Quicksand" and "A Kiss to Send Us Off". So on my iTunes, Light Grenades goes something like this:
1. Quicksand/A Kiss to Send Us Off
2. Dig
3. Anna Molly
4. Love Hurts
5. Light Grenades
6. Earth to Bella
7. Oil and Water
8. Diamonds and Coal
9. Rogues
10. Paper Shoes
11. Pendulous Threads
12. Punch Drunk
13. Look Alive

@Jeff, that's brilliant!
does anyone know why they didn't include those two tracks on the album? i don't understand it.
kind of similarly, i'm intrigued as to why they didn't include 'surface to air' on the latest one..

Pendulous Threads is one of the most thrilling songs I have ever heard live!! I heard it at The Warfield in San Francisco on the LG theater tour on January 9, 2007. It was during the encore. We all just went pretty apeshit. I was kind of disappointed that Mikey didn't do the amazing guitar meandering like on the album; but then we didn't know about his wrist either. Either way, amazing, amazing song live! Amazing song period! I cried when I saw Mikey back on stage in Berkeley. That was the first show that I went to after he was back. He came out during Simon Dawes and played with them and I totally teared up. I was like OMGGGGGGGGGG Mikey!!!!
